What We Each Need to Understand About Personal Development

You know that the You Never Stop Learning blog is composed of ideas for our personal development - it doesn't matter what line of "work" we're in, we all look for ways to stretch, recognizing that we never stop learning and we want to see ourselves hit new highs, take on challenges that we haven't mastered, to make progress as a human being.

Very often the effort we put into personal development activities are not about a promotion, but more about fulfilling a lack within ourselves or fostering stronger, more heartfelt relationships.

Whatever our reasons, there are some simple truths about personal development that we should recognize and this article does a great job of telling it like it is: The No. 1 Thing You Need to Know about Personal Development  from Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D. - Denny is such a credible source on the topic of personal development - you’ll appreciate his straight talk here.

We’ll go into it more in the July Ultimate Blog Challenge (well, the first week of blogging for me is just fun and interesting items – it IS a holiday week, after all).

Fun Foods for the 4th

I'm in a very holiday and summery mood and find it hard to talk about personal development right now. Summer has finally arrived in north Idaho, kids are coming home next week and it’s all about fun and outdoors these days.

So take a look at this:

I've recently come across these dishes, I have no recipes, but they're very cute and you can tell by the image how to do it - more work than I may ever put in on a dish, but they are almost irresistible! And it's better to see things like this the week BEFORE an event rather than the week of the event - some things take time to create, don't they?

Actually, if you DO make something like this, I think it should count in the personal development category!

Deviled Eggs

Bruchetta

Can any one actually create these????
You are the master of patience and creativity.

A Soothing Sunday Message

There comes a point in your life when you realize…

Who matters,
Who never did,
Who won't anymore...
And who always will.

So, don't worry about people from your past,
There's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

The Positive Side of Life

This is so beautiful – give yourself a few minutes on this frenzied Friday
to simply appreciate – and turn up the volume.

It's called the Positive Side of Life and Nat King Cole is crooning Stardust.

I wish I could attribute this creation to someone, but it’s one of those that showed up in an email from who knows where.

Are You Building Better Business Relationships?

How are your business relationships working out? Are there issues you’re concerned about with co-workers?

It’s certainly true that we don’t like everyone we work with, but getting along and working effectively with others is what we have to do and it’s sometimes a real trick, isn’t it?!?!

Beginning in July, I’m going to post daily info about behavioral styles (we all have them!) and to kick that off, I’m referencing the book The 8 Dimensions of Leadership.
This book is based on the behavioral style assessment we’ve used in personal and leadership development for decades – with lots of success – it’s called DiSC®.
Have you heard of it?
There are plenty of “personality assessments” out there, but my confidence in DiSC® comes from:
·    Experience and success with users of the profile
·    It’s NOT a personality assessment – there are no “bad” styles, but we can all make behavioral adaptations to improve relationships, can’t we?
·    Inscape Publishing’s solid research and validation
·    DiSC®’s focus on a specific world (personal life, business life, etc) – it’s not all-inclusive of your life
·    The specific focus allows you to target exact behaviors you’d like modify (maybe use more of or less of a certain behavior)
I’ll go into more detail as we go through the month, but you might care to check on the book for now. Here’s one review from amazon.com

The 8 Dimensions of Leadership is the first book to explore leadership through the lens of Inscape Publishing's third generation DiSC model of human behavior.

This title is designed to paint an inclusive picture of the varied approaches that make for strong leadership.

It primarily focuses on the interpersonal realm of leadership and helps readers identify which of the eight approaches comes most naturally to them.

The book utilizes and explains the DiSC model to help leaders learn to be more effective in their relationships and leadership roles. Focusing on the reader’s individual approach to leadership, the authors use primary literature and the latest research to support the third generation DiSIC model, which illustrates where different leadership styles fall on a simple circular map. Readers will be able to identify their own approach to leadership, explore the strengths and challenges that leaders with each of the approaches faces, and discover strategies for more effective leadership based on their personal approach.

Give it a try!
Question for you: Are there relationships you'd care to improve? Inyour personal world or your business world?

Strong Relationships and Must-Have Technology - Can They Work Together?

We’ve had such a great reception to our new website and focus on Getting to Know Yourself…and Others™ – thank you all so much! The Self-Study Program on Building Stronger Relationships is generating a lot of conversation!

I have to tell you an interesting thing that happened: in my family, when one of us does something new we usually share it with everyone just as way of staying connected – like so many families, we’re spread across the country and don’t sit over Sunday dinner bringing each other up to date – I’m sure that’s the same for many of you. So I sent the recent announcements about my business updates to family and friends.

My mother’s insight  - trust Mom! - was profound and succinct: “You’re emphasizing relationships yet you’re using technology to do it”. She actually stopped me cold because it’s technology that is chilling a lot of relationships – personally and professionally.

I thought back to leadership classes of times past, when clients had the budget and invited professionals in to conduct leadership training and education; then the development and state of relationships was always a huge block of learning. Time was spent on lessons and practice in:
  • Get to know your team members
  • Learn their motivators
  • Develop goals together
  • Have regular and frequent one-on-ones to coach, discuss, discover
  • Encourage, solicit their ideas
  • Understand what kinds of recognition matter to the individual
  • And so much more….
All of those interactions propelled team leader and team member to become better acquainted, to build a stronger relationship that made it more likely for both to succeed, to deal with problems calmly and promptly, to innovate, to appreciate other talents…maybe even ENJOY coming to work!

Now, in organizations that rely heavily on e-learning, many of those extended lessons and skill practice opportunities are severely minimized. There’s a mountain of work and it has to be completed FAST, FAST, FASTER. Relationships? Who’s got time?

Remember the comment in this blog from the other day: “I absolutely agree on the personal relationships, but I feel very old school when I try to maintain them. In my little world, the biggest killer is technology…losing the personal relationships that have worked so well for me over the years…I could get people to cooperate because they knew...me.”

There’s concern in many corners about relationships and our ability to connect with other people. In an interview with Brian Williams of NBC last night (June 5, 2012), President Clinton was asked about social media and commented that teens today average 80 text messages per day. He believes they “will have trouble being PRESENT where they are” in the future. What will relationships look like?

Today I can only conclude this:

Relationships: they add such richness to our lives as people as well as a multitude of positives and negatives.

Technology: it adds such richness to our lives as people as well as a multitude of positives and negatives.

I guess we better find a way to make them compatible – we need them both!

So, it turns out that I’m advocating building stronger relationships through technology.

I look at the design of my four part program – it DOES include a live, one-on-one consult – I just can’t seem to leave it all up to online learning – I’ve got to have a connection and KNOW something good has happened for my learner!

Question for you: Do you NEED the live connections?

Do relationships matter any more?!?!

In my last posting, I talked about some of the changes that were coming to my business and it’s now published, so please check out the announcement in our newsletter here: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs049/1100385597389/archive/1110153903795.html

Our renewed emphasis in relationships in personal and business lives is overdue, I think. We’ll still work with people in leadership development, but I feel it’s so important that the personal (…and I don’t mean private business – you know that I mean person to person…) be given more attention than just accomplishing daily to-do’s.

I’ve already had one response to the newsletter and this reader commented: “I absolutely agree on the personal relationships, but I feel very old school when I try to maintain them.  In my little world, the biggest killer is technology - it is used to track business, rate business, track complaints, track results.  We are being moved away from dealing with our customers (the schools).  We still audit their data and tell them when something is not right, but they are supposed to direct questions to our functional specialists 'team.'  That boils down to losing the personal relationships that have worked so well for me over the years.  I could get people (schools) to cooperate because they knew...me.  They knew I would help, if I could.  I have argued that we need to maintain those relationships in staff meetings, but I am the dinosaur.”

That is so frightening, isn’t it?

Check out our new home page and the Getting to Know Yourself…and Others™ - A Self-Study Program inBuilding Stronger Relationships, which is a four part learning experience  that will lead you to:

·  Discover your own preferred behaviors

·  Learn to recognize other peoples’ predominant behavior style

·  Adapt your behaviors to strengthen your relationships

·  Focus on specific People Skills and Personal Strengths that you want to develop

Relationships – personal and professional - do make a difference in life!
